Neurology is the study of the nervous system and brain. The most common diseases in this area include epilepsy, multiple sclerosis (MS), stroke, Parkinson’s disease and brain tumours. Qualification as a neurologist requires first qualifying as a medical doctor before taking a three-year accredited residency programme during which dementia, motor disorders and stroke are studied extensively. After completion, a neurology student may opt for a fellowship programme as a specialism. Those wishing to study paediatric neurology must have two years’ paediatric experience.
